Organic and Biodynamic Wines: A Spotlight on Avondale from South Africa

In recent years, the wine industry has seen a significant shift towards sustainability and environmental consciousness. Wine professionals and drinkers alike are increasingly drawn to wines produced through organic and biodynamic practices. In this blog, I look at the world of organic and biodynamic wines, with a special focus on Avondale from Paarl in South Africa who are passionate devotees of organic and biodynamic wine making.

Understanding Organic and Biodynamic Wines and what the benefits are

Organic wines are made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, while biodynamic wines integrate lunar cycles and natural preparations into the farming process.

These sustainable practices offer numerous benefits. They contribute to healthier ecosystems, promote soil health, and reduce the carbon footprint of winemaking. Additionally, organic and biodynamic wines often showcase distinct terroir-driven characteristics, reflecting the unique environment in which the grapes are grown.

Avondale Wines: A Testament to Biodynamic Excellence

Situated in the picturesque Paarl region of South Africa, Avondale Estate stands as a beacon of biodynamic farming principles. The estate's commitment to biodiversity and regenerative agriculture is evident in every bottle of Avondale wine.

Avondale embraces biodynamic practices such as composting, cover cropping, and natural pest control. Their holistic approach considers the vineyard as a living ecosystem, fostering a balanced environment where vines thrive naturally. This dedication to sustainable viticulture not only preserves the land for future generations but also produces exceptional wines with a true sense of place.

Avondale's Wine Portfolio

Avondale offers a stunning range of wines from it’s picturesque 160-hectare farm which has been under cultivation for over 300 years.  Here’s my current favourite wines from Avondale:

Armilla Blanc de Blanc 2016 – 100% Chardonnay, 24-months lees ageing prior to bottling before further cellaring – the wine is toasty and nutty with a delicious citrus zip.

Jonty’s Ducks White 2020 - a crisp, sumptuous yet elegant white made from a blend of Chenin Blanc, Roussanne, Muscat, Semillon & Viognier, named after owner Johnathan (Jonty) Grieve’s team of natural pest controllers - a flock of Pekin ducks!

Samsara Syrah 2012 - aromas of soft wood and white pepper, violets, vibrant red berries and orange peel. Samsara is full yet well-integrated with hints of plum and cherry, cloves, cinnamon and pepper.
