Cape Town’s Constantia Valley has a history of winemaking dating back as far as the mid 17th century, and its most famous export was simply called Constantia – a dessert wine made from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Pontac, Red and White Muscadel and Chenin Blanc. The wine was so popular that it is rumoured Napoleon ordered it to St. Helena, where he was exiled. Since the majority of the regions vineyards were destroyed by the Phylloxera plague, dessert wine production has only been resumed in the recent past, and renamed to ‘Vin de Constance’
