One of the three Western States, Oregon has been growing grape vines since the 1840s, though commercial wine production only took off in the 1960s. With over 20 sub-regions, Oregon is America’s second-biggest producer of wine, and around half of the grapes grown in Oregon are Pinot Noir, although the most popular exported wine is Cabernet Sauvignon. The coastal wineries near to Portland and Eugene produce some of the best red wines America has to offer, benefitting from the region’s terroir. The climate is also ideal for viticulture, with hot, dry summers and cool breezes.
