This large region that lies between the cool Atlantic and warm Mediterranean is a rugged, largely rural mosaic of broken deep valleys, rolling pastures, cereal fields, occassional vineyards and dark forests, cut through by the many rivers that take the snow melt from nearby mountains - all with the looming backdrop of the mighty Pyrenees in the near distance. Encompassing many smaller regions, which are often planted with local grape varieties and farmed in small scale, this is rural France at its most picture postcard.
