Considered Uruguay’s national grape, Tannat is a red wine grape originally from the Basque country between France and Spain. The grape thrives in hot climates, which is the reason for its success in the Americas, which account for around 60% of Tannat wine production. Wines made from Tannat are usually intense and full-bodied, with a rich texture and tannic, earthy flavour. Tannat is also often used in blending in order to take away the astringency of some Tannat wines.
