From the Bordeaux Region of France, Petit Verdot is a red wine grape, most commonly encountered in Bordeaux blends with Cabernet Sauvignon. The grape gives the wine intense, violet-black colour and powerful, concentrated character and tannic structure due to its high ratio of skin and seeds to juice. The fact that it is both early budding and late ripening, makes it a liability in cool vintages and during the 1960’s many vines were uprooted in Bordeaux and replaced with more reliable varieties. It has however enjoyed a new lease of life in New World in countries such as South Africa and Australia where it benefits from the warm, dry climate.
