Orange wine, or skin contact wine as it’s sometimes referred to, is one of the oldest methods of wine production in the world. Given its sudden boost in popularity, however, and it’s new found appreciation, you could be forgiven for thinking it was an emerging wine of choice.
This misnomer wine has been popular for many years, it just happens to be in the spotlight right now. Orange wine is somewhere between white wine and red wine production, with skin maceration the reason for the wine’s distinct hue. The amber colour comes from contact between the juice of white grapes and the skin. The maceration process can take anything from a few days to a month, as such like other wine styles, taste is very varied.
Orange wine is trending for all the right reasons, this style is deliciously dry with bold savoury notes.
