Rioja Vega

Rioja Vega dates back to 1882 when Don Felipe Ugalde established a bodega bearing his name in Haro. In 1948 the bodega united with Bodegas Muerza as a result of marriage and the name disappeared. In 1921, Rioja Vega was officially registered and has proven to be successful, ensuring a prosperous history of trade both domestically and internationally for over a century. The winery is situated in the town of Viana, situated 10 kilometres south-east of Logroño. Viana is a charming walled town that evokes similarities to the renowned Laguardia. On the nose, complex, expressive, with intense notes of tropical fruits and white flowers over delicate aromas of herbs. Unctuous and sweet attack on the mouth which develops into fresh citrus flavours. A subtle silky texture from the ageing on its fine lees in French oak barrels. A complex wine which will keep well for many years to come.
We love this wine with a pan fried tuna steak with coriander, chilli and lime.

Decanter, 2022, 94 points. SILVER - The Drinks Business Rioja Masters Awards, 2021. Top 100 Wines: Wines from Spain, 2019. 90 points: Guia Penin. Tim Atkin, 90 points, February 2021. 92 points, Decanter May 2021, Spain's Indigenous Whites: Sweet oak character and lemon sherbet fruit on the nose. Palate is very well balanced with spicy oak, lovely creamy texture, very fresh acidity and a long finish." Tim Atkin, February 2024: ''Rioja Vega have made a speciality of Tempranillo Blanco, using grapes from Viana. This one comes from two parcels and was fermented in a combination of 95% new American, French and Hungarian oak. Nutty, toasty and refreshing, with lots of citrus zing, subtle wax and nectarine undertones and appealing texture.''
