Petite Sirah was first developed in the 1870s in the French Rhone, a cross between Syrah and a minor Rhône variety, Peloursin. However, despite the fact the origins of this grape were in France, it is California where one can find the best examples of Petite Sirah. The "Petite" refers to the size of the grapes, with the high skin to juice ratio enabling Petite Sirah to produce wines with high tannins and acidity, enabling them to age well. Petite Sirah has recently experienced somewhat of a revival, both in blends and bottled as a single or main variety. Wonderfully dense blackberry fruit character mixed with black pepper notes mark this deep, ruby coloured wine.
