If you think of wine from the USA, it is often the state of California which is highlighted as an example of wine from America, but of the 52 states in the Union, some 48 of them make wine of one sort or another. In the USA, a lot of wine was historically produced from higher yielding hybrid grapes from the Vitis Labrusca such as Concorde, but in many pockets through states such as Missouri, Texas, Ohio, Indiana and NY state there are now burgeoning wine estates which are producing top quality wines from non-native Vitis Vinifera vines such as Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The heartland of US winemaking, however, continues to be on the western seaboard, concentrated in California, Washington State and Oregon, with grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Merlot all prospering. The rise of sweetish Pink Zinfandel and bulk red and white wines produced for global brands, much of which comes from industrial-sized operations in the warm Central valley is at the forefront of the rise in US wines popularity both at home and globally.
